Frequently asked questions about solar heating

Why install thermal solar heating?

  • Virtually free energy
  • Increase in property value
  • Solar panels have become a real financial option and is accepted as the most effective of all the renewable energies.

Why solar energy and not wind energy?

Wind is better on larger scale installations or on coastal areas or windswept hills, but your average house turbine means the efficiency is very low.

Is there enough sunshine in the UK for solar panels?

Yes. Each year, every square metre of the British Isles receives 60% of the solar radiation found at the equator. Solar panels do not require direct sunshine to work.

Can solar panels add value to my property?

Yes, your home value will increase. People are prepared to pay for more efficient homes. Estate Agents are now carrying out Energy Assessments as part of the HIPS report.

How long will my solar panels last?

Panels that were fitted in the 1960 and 1970’s are still operational and the technology now has moved on considerably. You can expect in excess of 30 years service.

How much hot water will I get?

On average a two panel installation will provide you with virtually free hot water for seven months of the year. Your existing water heater will provide a boost when it is required. A significant amount of hot water will still be generated during the rest of the year, but proportionally less.

How much CO2 will be reduced by fitting thermal solar heating?

The average domestic system reduces CO2 by around 350 – 400 kilogram per year, depending on the fuel replaced.

How much will a thermal solar system cost?

Less than you think. The cost of a Solar Thermal Hot Water Systems installation generally ranges from £3,200 to £4,500.

A non-standard installation would cost more.
